Daffodils -- Step by Step

Laura Robb /

Yesterday I was trying to decide on a blog topic to write about,  yet at the same time wishing I could find time to paint some daffodils that had just opened up out in the yard. Instead of settling on one or the other, I decided to do a step by step of my painting progress and let the paint strokes do the talking. If I manage to finish this one I'll show the rest of the steps next month. Please note that I am painting from life --- looking at the actual flowers rather than working from the photo which has been posted here just as a reference. As some of the flowers moved or opened up, I included shapes I liked better and also made adjustments to help the overall image read better. This study follows my usual direct painting approach. I'm working with my standard palette, applying the pigments with both brushes and a painting knife. Feel free to write me if you have any questions -- [email protected]. Here are the results so far:
